Dental FillingsAn Overview
Dental fillings are primarily used to treat minor to moderate tooth decay. Tooth cavities are amongst the most common dental concerns affecting both children and adults. Caught early, cavities can be treated with a dental filling to help prevent further damage to the tooth and overall oral health.
Cosmetic white dental fillings are also an effective treatment option for repairing minor chips or cracks on teeth in the “smile zone.” White fillings are metal free and are a preferred option for many patients. Cosmetic fillings can be color matched to seamlessly blend with your natural smile for aesthetically pleasing results.
Preventing Tooth Decay
Brushing and flossing twice a day is essential for maintaining your healthiest smile. Proactive oral hygiene can help the patient avoid tooth decay and other dental concerns. Preventative dental care is the best way to retain the stability of your natural smile.
Dr. Banks encourages all patients to visit our Shenandoah Valley family dentist office at least twice a year for routine oral health exams. Regular dental checkups allow for effective preventative care, such as professional teeth cleanings, and help our team catch progressive health concerns in their earliest stages for a chance at conservative treatment.
Dental exams at Smile Designs of the Shenandoah Valley in Inwood also include a thorough a check of the face, neck and oral cavity to ensure the total well-being of our patients. Dr. Banks will screen for tooth caries, oral cancer and the signs of gum disease and bite problems.

Dental Fillings What to Expect
For patients with mild to moderate tooth decay, a dental filling may be the ideal treatment option. A routine dental procedure, dental fillings are minimally invasive and help to retain the integrity of the natural tooth. Dr. Banks offers a range of high-quality filling materials that fit different lifestyles and budgets. Dr. Banks will help you choose the option that offers the optimal benefits for your smile.
Dr. Banks will begin by administering a local anesthetic to numb the area to be treated. For patients with dental anxiety, be sure to ask about our sedation dentistry options. Sedation dentistry will allow you to remain alert, but completely comfortable and relaxed during your treatment.
Once comfortable, Dr. Banks will start by removing the decayed tooth material, gently scraping away the diseased tissue. Dr. Banks will then thoroughly clean the tooth. The dental filling material of choice will be applied to the tooth. Dr. Banks will use a special light to bond the filling material. The tooth will then be polished and finished for a beautiful and durable result.
