Gum disease is a bacterial infection of the gums. Gum disease is one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss. Research has suggested that gum disease is linked to an increased risk of diabetes, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and stroke.
It is imperative that patients visit the dentist at least twice a year from a preventive dental care exam. During your preventive dental care visit, Dr. Kenneth Banks and Dr. David Schmid can thoroughly examine the teeth, mouth, and gums to check for signs and symptoms of gum disease. Early diagnosis may help prevent further damage to the teeth and gums. We encourage our patients to visit our Inwood, WV dentist office for the dental care they need.

Treating Gum Disease
Dr. Banks and Dr. Schmid will work with each patient to develop a customized treatment plan to treat their teeth and gums. We may recommend one or more treatment options to effectively treat patients with gum disease.
- Scaling & Root Planing: Scaling and root planing is an extensive deep cleaning. Scaling and root planing gently removes plaque and tartar build-up from the teeth and gumline. Scaling and root planing may need to be combined with another treatment or be repeated to effectively eliminate gum disease.
- Laser Dentistry: Laser dentistry is a minimally invasive treatment to treat gum disease. Laser therapy can be used to remove bacteria from deep pockets that form around the gum line.
