Tooth ExtractionsAn Overview
Tooth extractions may be necessary in the case of advanced tooth decay, impacted wisdom teeth, overcrowding or for a damaged tooth. Dr. Banks aims to always offer the most conservative treatment option and will always try to save the tooth with a dental filling or root canal if possible. For some patients, a tooth removal will be necessary to preserve and repair oral health. Dr. Banks performs tooth extractions from the comfort of his Inwood, WV dentist office.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Patients in their late teens and early twenties often require wisdom tooth removal of one or all of their wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are the last molars to develop in the mouth and are commonly removed to avoid overcrowding, shifting of the remaining teeth or because they are unable to emerge properly. Wisdom tooth removal is a standard procedure that can be completed from the comfort of our Inwood, WV dentist office. Dr. Banks will use a local anesthetic to numb the area before removal for the patient’s comfort. Our team will explain aftercare in detail for a speedy and healthy recovery.

Tooth Extractions What to Expect
A tooth extraction typically can be completed in one visit to our dentist office. Depending on the location and number of teeth needing to extracted, Dr. Banks may recommend a missing tooth replacement options such as a dental implant. This will be discussed prior to treatment and a plan will be made and explained to each patient so that they completely understand the procedure.
Dr. Banks will administer local anesthetic for optimal comfort before beginning a tooth extraction. Dr. Banks and our dental care team will make sure that the patient is relaxed and comfortable before proceeding.
Once the patient is ready, Dr. Banks will use special tools to remove the tooth. The tooth will be gently rocked back and forth loosening the roots. The tooth will then be pulled from the root canal. The root socket will be thoroughly cleaned and prepared for a dental restoration if necessary.
For many patients, a local anesthetic is enough to ease any discomfort. For patients with dental anxiety, Dr. Banks offers different types of sedation dentistry. Dr. Banks will discuss sedation dentistry options with patients during their consultation prior to treatment and explain the benefits of the different types. Oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide both allow the patient to remain awake but totally relaxed during treatment.
